Sunshine Challenge - Sanford, FL

Wed Nov 26, 2008 2:32 pm

I know how Doc hates FL and may not want to read about a competition there.. but he's short so what the hell does he know anyway?
I entered some beers into the Sunshine Challenge last week and it was my first competition. I was pretty pleased with my score (33/50) and got some good feedback.. I was glad to hear it was more about the recipe than my brewing techniques.

As for the competition itself.. it was pretty interesting. From what I heard, there were 800 entries. It started on a Friday with a club night (drinks around the pool at a pretty nice lakeside resort/marina in Sanford near Orlando). Then Saturday was the judging, pub crawl, an awards dinner. I would recommend it to anyone within reasonable distance of Sanford or wherever they may hold it next year.

You can read more about my recipe and scoresheet here if you so choose:

As the Competition Director for Sunshine Challenge, I can tell you that I, for one, am glad that there weren't 800 entries. We had about 350 3 bottle entries this year. Less than last year, but we have two more competitions in our Florida circuit than we had last year.

Chad, we are glad that you sent in your beer to our competition. I look forward to seeing your entries next year.
