I've got that same one on tap at home, it's not a stout, it is a black IPA. You went the right way with the experimental category. I do wish the NHC would waive the '1 entry per subcategory' when it comes to the experimental category. I understand the rule for other styles, but they've got about 20 different historical beers listed there, if someone wanted to brew a few historical beers and a few experimental why couldn't they enter them all? I couldn't enter this beer, because I already used that spot for a West Coast Amber, that beer and the Blackened Brutal Bitter are entirely different styles.

although ...
For the first few pints I had to not look at the glass or I would taste stout. And I knew there was nothing in it but Carafa II, the power of suggestion for someone told that it's an American stout might be enough for them to think it actually is.

So, did you guys get a grain bill for this guy, the Blackened Brutal Bitter?

It sounds really interesting.

Every time I try to hop the hell out of dark beers, it tends to be dulled out by the bitterness of the dark grains. Or the blend of the two just seems to come across as a bit too acidic.

The Brutal Bitter really isn't that dark of a beer to begin w/, but what's the L & IBU of the Blackened version. Also, what's the overall impression of that beer?

The hoppy black beer is something I've been chasing for a few batches now and can't seem to nail it just right. I'm beginning to think the two just don't belong together.

It's a More Beer Kit, in the signature series.

There are no acrid type roasted grains, just the huskless carafa

I had a really great black IPA today at the Boulder Strong Ale Fest. It was called Black Lie by Pizza Port. They labeled it as a San Diego Style IPA (8% AVB).
