I was at the Craft Brewers Conference when it was held in San Diego in 2007. the hotel/conference center is the same venue for the NHC. it is a big place but it's all in the same place. there isn't a reason to be "closer" to the conference part because it's all 10 minutes walking from anywhere on the grounds. when I was there I stupidly didn't stay at that hotel. instead I chose to save a few bucks by booking a place that seemed close enough that I could walk to/from. the thinking was it's called "hotel row" because there are so many things there. that was a mistake. especially after drinking all night and all day. every day ended with more bottles and glasses to carry home. I remember it being heavy is why I mention it.
there are three reasons to get there early or stay another day(s) if you are traveling to the conference from a place other than California. one is to trip to other local breweries: Stone, Lost Abby, Port, etc. if you had to pick just one you have to go to Stone which could be described as "Disney Land for beer". it's gorgeous to the point where you wont' want to leave. two is to hang at some awesome local spots: Hamilton's, O'Brien's and Toronado just to name a few. every trip ends up at these three places. and I never want to leave them once I get there. all three of these are kinda close to the hotel. you can bus or cab there for cheap enough. and third, there's a ton of stuff to do that isn't beer: zoo, museums, gardens, the ocean, etc. every time I crash through SD I think "dammit, I need to spend more time here."
instead of going to the banquet use the money for a night on the town. especially if that's your last night in SD. it's something to consider.
