Great Arizona Beer Fest (late posting, sorry)

Tue Jun 10, 2008 7:53 pm

Know this is pretty late, but did anyone else participate in the Great Arizona Beer Fest (GAzBF) homebrew competition? Was held in mid March, in Pheonix, AZ. I sent in 5 bottles (3 beer and two mead). I wasn't expecting anything really in return, but low and behold... a clean sweep. All five entries were awarded medals. 3 silvers and two bronze. :D This is my first year brewing AG, and I simply wanted some critical feedback on my brewing. Alas, I received this, along with a box stock full of medals and free swag! I'd love to hear if any other BNer's showed at this event.

I sent in 3. Alt, Bourbon Porter, and Scottish. I screwed up and submitted the porter in the "regular" porter category - the JD bourbon chips gave it a little smoke flavor (phenols). Probably should have entered that one in the wood aged category. I placed 3rd with my Altbier - which also placed 3rd in the 1 round of nationals. I was going to volunteer to judge/steward - but I got called out of town on business. Geistbier judged (and he killed my porter :x )

The GAzBF is getting to be a decent sized competition. I think they had around 130 entries this year. I entered 3 beers and won a gold with my Belgian Dark Strong ale. I'm pretty excited because the beer was picked by Papago to be their GABF Pro/Am entry this year. I think I'll be helping them brew it sometime next week.

Since you're in AZ, you should consider entering ASH's Oktoberfest competition later this year. The date is set for October 4th and entries will probably be due a week before then. For more info check out

Does the Flagstaff club run any competitions?

We did have one last year, we even got Rock Candy Palmer to help judge. But the club has slowed this year, it will depend on the new club leadership to decide.

For disclosure I ran the competition last year and the club, but as I moving shortly I'll be handing the club off to others.
