Flying Saucer is OK. It's just too commercialized for me. I prefer smaller pubs with a large selection. But that's just me.

It's not at the top of my list, but B.B. Rover's is near the Arboretum:

My waitress had nice tits. Tits trump commercialism every time. Now if someone would only open a bar with waitresses in cheerleader outfits. . . :pop

I second the Ginger Man. Much less commercialized than FS.

As far as a market to run in for pickups, Whip In is not too shabby.

Real Ale (Blanco) has some kickin brew.
Saint Arnold (Houston)
Rahr & Sons (Fort Worth)
Southern Star (Conroe) (in cans. that's right, cans.)

...all worth checking out, as far as TX local brews go, imho.

At the pub, however, you should also be able to find (512), Live Oak, Independence, Thirsty Planet, and Jester King all from Austin on tap. (not totally sure on TP, though) As mentioned elsewhere, Black Star Co-op is having their Grand Opening, and will have theirs as well as other locals on tap.

Spec's is also good if you're looking for a bottle(and can) shop. This is the one closest to the Arboretum:
