Erdinger Weissbier (Hefe-Weizen)

Thu Jun 30, 2005 2:26 pm

500 ml big ’ole brown German bottle. An authentic Bavarian wheat beer, if ever there was one. Freshness date is of 02-2005. Slightly dated, but still lively nonetheless. Poured out a pale straw golden yellow color, with a volumous white head at first. It slid back rather slowly to a thick matting of lacing on top of the beer. Aromas are of slight bubblegum, lactic wheat malt, sweet yeasty bread, slight citrus, and phenols. Tastes are of a slightly phenolic nature, with the tang of the wheat shining thru. Just enough hops to balance the tang of the yeast and the wheat malt. Medium mouthfeel. Crisp, and tingly on the tongue. Refreshing, easily drinkable, especially on out famous Washington, DC summer days. I found it to be one of the better Hefe-Weizens I’ve had recently. I think you’ll find it everything I’ve said it was.

If you liked the Erdinger, see if you can track down the Weihenstephaner hefe - it will blow you away by comparison. The Franziskaner is pretty good too, may be easier to track down.
