750ml. brown bottle. /02 on the cork. Practically blew the cork right out of my hand when opened. Very effervescent, like a very good champagne. Poured out a faint straw yellow color, with a stiff peak meringue head on it. Slowly faded to a rocky, yeast clumped island of a head in the center of the glass. Aromas of Belgian yeast, cloves, slight banana background as well. Not much in the way of aroma hops. Slight tang to it as it's drank. Very rich mouthfeel, very filling as well. Fruity esters abound in this beer. Finishes dry on the tongue. No discernable aftertaste either. Crisp, very refreshing, and makes a wonderful antidote to a bad toothache. A great beer from Belgium.

I don't like the tang. I think it's from the yeast sediment. I find that when I buy Duvel it's best to put it away for a week or so to let everything properly settle out before drinking.

Thats so funny that you mentioned the stiff peaks. The first time I drank this I thought of a merangue as well!!

had my first duvel last night, definitely a stomach warmer.

I had one a few weeks ago that was skunky. Even w/ the brown bottle and being conditioned, etc. etc. etc. It was flat out light struck.
So just a heads up, you may want to buy the last one in the back of the row.

I made my own mix-a-six last weekend and got this bottle. When I lived in Europe, it was common to find the small capped bottle in the bars, which was great.

The corked bottle was very different and very good. Although for a 8.5% abv beer I would expect a much bolder flavor, which was not present and at the same time a nice surprise. Smooth despite the content.
