Pliny the Younger

Sun Feb 07, 2010 10:25 am

What do people think of Pliny the Younger this year? I had 3 glasses at Russian River on Friday. It had all the qualities you would expect from one of the pioneers of double IPAs. I really liked the dry attenuation. I thought the fermentation was a little stressed but it was quite clean for a 11% beer. It really tasted like an IPA and not like a barley wine. I thought the moothfeel was a little thin and I would have added more 30 minute hops. Overall really nice. I think I was fonder of last years.

Gotta say I'm jealous. I came to Oakland for the winter brews fest and missed the younger by just days. One of these years the stars might align and I'll get my hands on this younger you speak of.

A pub 3 blocks from me gets a keg every year so I have had lots of it. I had about 20 pints of last years. Russian River is only a 30 minute drive for me. My friends and I end up getting about 1/2 of the keg each year. At $5 for 8 oz it lasts a week or so. I also helps that they keep it a secret when it gets tapped.

Does the Younger use sugar as part of the bill like Elder does?

I never get what all the hullabaloo is over this beer? maybe because it's here and then not here so fast that everyone loses their collectives minds over it. every time I've had it I've never had another one right then. let's just say that I'm not a fan.

better examples of the big IPA are Magnolia Promised Land, 21st Amendment Hop Crisis or Triplerock IIPAX. and if you really want a punch in the nuts find a way to have Denogonizer from Drakes. sorry kids, these are local beers for me.

and can we stop calling this style India Pale Ale whatever because NONE of them are going there. in fact if you served this style to anyone outside of HopLand they'd gag then same way "beer geeks" gag over Bud. West Coast Pale is a better name. but if you want to include the whole world over I propose 3PA as in 3X Pale Ale.

not on tap: Beer School the beer pouring at 21st Amendment. we drank it all.

Im kinda with you on this one John. Last year I got the chance to try it. While being a great punch you in the junk beer. There are a lot of other great local bay area beers that stand up just as well . Local to others as well.
