Lagunitas Hop Stoopid

Mon Sep 01, 2008 3:14 pm

Visiting Chicago for the next couple of months and checking out the local beer scene (thanks to the Beer Mapping Project).

The Clark St. Ale House has Lagunitas Hop Stoopid Imperial IPA on tap. I had never heard of Hop Stoopid, but I'm a big fan of the Maximus.

Here it is served in a snifter which I assume means it's higher in alcohol, but I have no idea what the ABV is.

Appearance: Clear with a nice copper color, decent head and good, off-white lace.

Aroma: This is a tough one, hard to describe. The aroma is not bad, and may be what some call danke (sp?). Not particularly bright nor citrusy.

Tatse: Full bodied. good bitterness level for the style. I tend to prefer "brighter" more citrus type hop varieties. This is a bit heavy for my taste.

Overall: A very solid IPA that I wouldn't turn down.

I consider Hop Stoopid to be bright, citrusy, and pretty dry. Not sure what happened here...

I guess I'm going to have to call into question the Clark Street Ale House. That's two beers in a row on which I've received contradicting opinions. Perhaps they are not maintaing proper cleanliness and sanitation on their draft lines.

Reserving judgement for the moment.

Clark Street Ale House does not clean their lines regularly enough. Just like the Village Tap on Roscoe. Both those places have a great selection of beers... but the lines are shit. And the Village Tap does not do that much business anymore so the kegs sit there for far too long. I havent gone there in years ever since we had the worst bitch of a bartender there. (combined with the fact that I now live in Seattle)

I love the Hop Stoopid, and would like to try brewing a clone of it.

In the bottle, Hop Stoopid is a great IPA. Sounds like tap line problems to me too.

+1! Love me some Hop Stoopid! and at $4.50 a bomber you can't go wrong. I would love to hear a CYBI on this one although I believe they use hop extract for that one.

First time I had a Stoopid, I followed it with a Two Brother's Bitter End. It tasted like a swig of straight malt. Stoopid will blast your taste buds!
