The Springfield Brewing Company

Sun Nov 08, 2009 1:19 pm

So my GF and I took a trip about 75 miles up the road to the closest city to us and while we were there we checked out The Springfield Brewing Company.

I've got to say it was a nice place with a great old building, good food and a great atmosphere

They had a small selection of 6 beers that are brewed on the premise. Just your standard stuff like Pale ale, IPA, Porter, Marzen, Wheat, and one other that escapes me at the moment

We had the Porter and the marzen on draught and took a 6 pack home of the Unfiltered wheat and the Pale ale

All of the beers were very good in their own right.

I guess my one complaint was the lack of "Ground breaking" beers being made there. However I do realize that their normal Midwest clientele may reject such offerings and they may brew what they do according to what they can sell in this area.

So in summary, a good local brewpub and a place I will visit whenever my travels take my nearby.

I live in a place where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a great microbrewery and I am sooo over "ground breaking" beers. Double this and imperial that- I'm done with it. I judge a place by how well they can make a pale ale or an IPA. If they can do either of those well, I'm impressed and happy. I think it takes more skill to make a beer that stands out in a catagory with a million other examples than it does to do something outrageous and wild.

Being in the midwest, IPAs aren't standard fair, that is what is funny about your statement.

If they have an IPA that is extreme in many brew pubs around here, that is changing though and quick.

I have heard mixed reports about Springfield, mostly pedestrian is what I have heard. Mr. Wizard from BYO is the brewer there and they use the brewery as a test "kitchen" for the brew systems they(some company in Springfield) sell.

I guess I'm just spoiled by the BN - I really don't think an IPA is an extreme beer at all

That I didn't know - our waitress really couldn't tell us much and only had a basic understanding of the beers that she was serving us

Like I said, I would go back and I wish there was a place like that around where I live but it wasn't a life changing experience or anything

Yep, I dont consider an IPA extreme either but many would that aren't geeks. I have a friend that lives in Rogersville south of Springfield. He went to backwoods brewery place not too long ago that was a trip of a visit. The banjo's should have been playing from my understanding but he considers it a must see now. The beer was not that great but the sheer experience was worth it. I will get the info and send it to you.

The Little Yeoman is the name of the brewery.

It is out by Cabool east on 60 outside of Springfield.

That is the best I can do. You might be able to find it in a phone book. I will google it too.
