Cantillon St. Lamvinus - 2002

Mon Sep 14, 2009 6:10 pm

Well...what is there to say....completely unbelievable.

I usually don't buy beer on EBay, but I could not pass this up....$45.00 including shipping.
The packaging was poor at best and it appeared to have leaked on arrival.
I had planned to cellar it for a special occasion, but since the cap was wet I figured I would drink it.

Nose was very sour and musty/earthy, almost wanted to call it 'spoiled or corked red wine', but not quite that strong.
First sip was truly unique...I have had many Cantillons, but this was the most sour of the bunch. I am not sure if it was
because of the age, the minimal O2 that got in due to the Asshat's lack of packaging skills, or if Lamvinus is just that sour (First One).
The grape flavor was there, but not as upfront as I expected.

I spent about 2 hours getting through this bottle, and as it warmed/breathed, vanilla and oak seems to come out, but not
in the way that an oaked beer would...just in the background.

If you get the chance, get this beer...I wish I could have aged it, but it made my brew session very enjoyable. I have a
sour chilling as I type this, and I have added the dregs to my starter of Brett C, Brett B. and Pedio.
