I am new to kegging. I have six ball lock kegs. I have two picnic taps.

The problem I have is one of the beverage out quick disconnects will not lock on to one of the kegs. I looks like it slides down far enough but just will not catch. It locks onto all five of the other kegs with no problem. The second tap works fine with all six kegs.

Is there some incompatibility between kegs and quick disconnects that could be the problem here? Is there some way to diagnose the problem with the problem keg?

It sounds like you have the posts switched around on one keg. You probably have a gas post on the beer out side. Take a look at the post and see if it looks like this:

The gas post will either have notches on the points of the hex shaped base like the above picture or will have a 12 pointed base. It is real easy to get the posts on the wrong side when putting the keg back together after cleaning. I've been kegging for years and still mess it up now and then. If you look closely, the posts are shaped slightly different and the quick disconnects won't go on the wrong post very well. Sometimes you can get them on but can't get them off.

I found the reason the QD will not latch. The poppet of the problem post does not have enough travel (compression) to allow the QD to go far enough to latch.

Does that mean I have the wrong poppet? How do you determine what size poppet a keg should have?

Just replace the poppet, you'll probably always have a problem with it. They're cheap.

You will need one of the four poppets on this page. http://www.williamsbrewing.com/KEG_PARTS_C78.cfm

On the side of your keg you will see the name of the manufacturer and the keg model. This will be etched into the keg but will often be hard to make out without examining closely in good light. You can get these poppets at MoreBeer and Northern Brewer (Brewing Network Sponsors) but Williams has better pictures of what you need.
