Another leaking CO2 question

Tue Nov 01, 2011 10:20 am

Is it possible for a regulator to be leaking. I just lost a brand new 5lb cylinder worth of CO2. On a system that has been working fine. I did notice near the end of the last bottle my pressure started creeping up. Thought maybe it had to do with running low on gas. When I hooked this bottle up I thought I had heard or felt some air coming from the regulator but couldnt find any leak with the star san. I am thinking that the regulator may be leaking though and that by the time i got the star san to it it had slowed enough for me not to notice, or i just didnt spray the right place, like the back of the regulator. If it is the regulator should a repair kit do the trick? Obviously they sell these repair kits for a reason. Thanks

Have you leak checked the keg or anything down stream from the regulator? Do you have a teflon or rubber gasket on your regulator to gas cylinder interface ?

The keg is fine. Have to look for the gasket It may have fell out but I havent had this problem before and this system had been in use for about 4 years now.

The little o-ring is still there on the regulator coupling. I am just going to have to make the 1.5 hr round trip and get another bottle and spray test everything. Mixed with half-split isolation methods to find this leak.

This thread makes me sad  .
I had my share of leaks early on for the simple fact that I had just got my kegs and I couldn't wait to use them. None of my connectors were tight. I just trusted NB to have taken care of that. Not the case. After a bit of teflon tape and a couple turns with some wrenches, I was golden.
Until last Saturday, that is.
I went downstairs to my trusty kegerator, opened it, and what did I see? About 3 fuckin gallons of a pumpkin ale I had brewed awhile back, that's what.
At some point, I carbed it, drank a bit of it, disconnected the gas and liquid, put them on a different keg, and left it. To my dismay, I had a leaky "out" post.
There's no doubt that if I left the gas on it, I would've had all of the beer and a bottle of gas go right into the lumber yard.
Leaks blow! Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.
Check over everything, every time you mess with it. I have a small bottle of starsan next to my kegerator, but I only used it to spray the faucets after pouring. Now I use it for leak detection, too.
:jnj and good luck on your hunt.

I to am sad at this thread. Went thought this myself. upgraded to vlave couplings and brass manifold with a reliable regulator. Performed leak tests by placing the whole system into a tote of starsan/water solution to check for leaks. All good. Lost two bottles on the old system. Yes, kegs can suck bad. I hate to say it, but I buy new kegs only now.

Well I think it is the regulator. I finally got a new CO2 bottle hooked it up and the little vent hole in the front of the regulator by the adjustment screw would give me a slow growing bubble when I sprayed it with starsan. I took it appart, cleaned and keg lubed everything inside it seemed to slow the bubble down but didnt stop it. So I applied pressure closed the tank and the check valve coming out of the regulator if it is the regulator i am guessing both gauges will hit zero within some time. In the mean time i ordered a repair kit from NB.
