I've never done this upgrade but I have seen places selling dual port shanks, so you could basically keep your existing tower and swap in this new shank to add an extra tap.
I suspect the larger column diameter is due to the extra room needed by the tailpieces. You could probably drill a hole in your existing at a different offset to mount another tap/shank. If you staggered them I bet it would work with your existing tower
I have a single tap kegerator I picked up off craigslist I've been planning on fixing up for my garage. Best prices I've seen for a triple tap tower and perlick faucets is this place via amazon:
