Craigslist shopping

Thu Jun 16, 2011 12:18 pm

I was looking for used/cheap kegging equipment on CL, when it occurred to me that an old CO2 tank, when pressurized, could easily become a bomb if the tank was sub-par.

So I ask: what steps/precautions do I need to take when finding and examining CO2 tanks purchased from individuals?

I think co2 tanks are hydro-tested when manufactured and that is good for "X" amount of years, after that they need to be tested again to make sure it holds pressure and is safe to use.
Personally, I would look for the other components on CL or EBay and look into getting your tank from a place that you could pay a deposit and exchange tanks as needed.

P.S. I found some pretty good deals on used regulators on eBay. I think I got a single gauge one for like $15 shipping an all.

I work in the compressed gas business. You shouldn't have any problem getting a 5lb, 10lb, or even 20lb cylinder exchanged at a welding supply store. Hydro test in my area is about 15 bucks if they check the stamp when you exchange it. Most places will not exchange 25lb or 50lb cylinders with local shop names (other than thier own) stamped into the neck ring of the cylinder. If the neck ring is blank, your golden. Co2 cylinders have to be re-hydro tested every 5 years. If your getting the cylinder filled, the will not fill an expired cylinder until after hydro test.
