That funky smell...

Tue May 17, 2011 7:26 am

I just got in a keg that I bought from eBay. The previous owner was a fellow homebrewer so this keg has had beer in it.
When I opened the keg for the first time I got a nose full of soured beer smell.
My question is.. How do I get this smell out? I don't have a HB shop that's close enough to drive out to just for some PBW. So is there anything I can pick up at a walmart or home depot to get this funk out?

Thanks for the help!

If you have a walmart around you could get some OxyClean free. I would take it all apart then give it and the parts a 24 hour soak. If there is still a smell you might try baking soda. Also you might want to replace all the soft O rings (diptibe, lid, post) and boil all the other keg parts (poppets, posts, lid etc) At least that's what I do when I get a used keg.
