Freezing your keg...is this a problem?

Sun Apr 25, 2010 11:03 am

I had a fully fermented, conditioned and carbonated Belgian beer that is in a 5 gallon Corny. I accidentally froze the keg (...sounds solid...no sloshing). I am thawing it out now, but am wondering if I have wrecked the beer. Advice?

It was carbonated to 2.5 volumes.

Just wondering if it will be the same as before? ???

So much for bottling today...

It'll drop any residual yeast and be really clear and bright, way more so than normal.

Some say that the flavor drops a little bit, but I've done that a couple of times and never really noticed any lack of flavor due to freezing.

I haven't noticed a substantial change in flavor, but I've noticed that after accidentally freezing some beers in my kegerator (temp controller went wacky) after thawing they had substantially less body and head retention. I think Jamil said he noticed something similar on the Eisbock show, which lead me to believe that I wasn't crazy.

That said, I've accidentally frozen and thawed some commercial beers and hadn't noticed a huge difference. I guess it's up to you.

You probably need to repitch if you haven't hit FG yet.

I was just getting ready to keg it, any other suggestions or things I should be aware of due to this stupid mixup?

I was cleaning my kegerator and once complete, I neglected to put the probe for the thermostat back into the cavity of the freezer and left it sitting on the windowsill, so it ran constantly for a full day and a half before I even noticed. That shit was frozen solid.

I think there was some change to the beers, and I also think it sped up some of the aging process - the aroma hops in my rye IPA dropped a lot in just the last week, way more than normal.
