so I clearly have no idea how my temperature controler works

I plugged the freezer into my ranco digital temperature controler yesterday. I set the controler at 52, I set the temperature reading to F for farenheit (?), I set a 2 degree variance (50-54 dregrees) and let it do it's thing over night.

This morning it's sitting at 65 or so degrees....wtf?

there's one setting on the thing I don't think I understand. It says either C1 or H1. I'm guessing it means you want to cool to whatever setting you chose or you want to heat up to that setting so I have it set on C1.

wtf am I doing wrong?

is it just me or is your probe laying against the wall of the freezer? I don't think you will get an accurate reading that way with a freezer because that's where the cooling is

I dangle my probe free and also have a separate temp gauge inside the fridge so I can monitor temps

I am using the older analog controller but what I set the controller at and the temp inside the freezer are usually not quite the same

I'll go move is and see what happens.

I have a thermowel I'm going to use during fermentation, but it's obviously not in there yet since I'm not fermenting yet.

Once you set your final temp, C1, variance, etc. , don't forget to keep scrolling through until the degrees temp comes back on the screen. I usually hear my fridge kick on when that happens.

you mean the temp I want it set at or the temp it's actually at?

I just went out there to move the probe and it said it was 80 inside the freezer

That's a 2-stage controller. You are likely plugged into the heating circuit. Try plugging into the upper outlet.

I plugged it into the uper outlet and it's been that way for a while now. it seems like the freezer is on...it's running and rumbling, but it's 84 inside it now.

I'm going to leave it that way for the afternoon as we have plans and will check on it to night. if it's not working by the time we get home I'm just going to plug the freezer directly into the wall and wll break out the johnson controler tomorrow and see if that one works.

I have the same controller and it's something of a mystery to me as well. Its use is definitely not very intuitive, but I manage to use mine pretty effectively. If it still doesn't work by tonight, post it here and I will walk you through the settings I use (as best I can  )
