Tapped keg store-ability

Sat Aug 29, 2009 11:04 am

I'm considering getting a small kegging setup with 2 cornies in a small fridge with picnic taps. The taps would always be in the fridge. If I am drinking the whole keg myself over the course of a month or 2, is there any issue with keeping the picnic taps clean? It's seems like the spout would get moldy. Would a kegerator with real taps be a better option for drinking the beer slowly like this?

Thanks in advance for the advice.
Matt

I have the same setup at home with anywhere from 1-4 kegs on tap at any given time. I have never had an issue with moldy spouts on my picnic taps. Although if you are into going green and saving a bit of green, then I recommend the kegarator taps option because you are not constantly opening the fridge door to fill up your empty glasses with delicious schwill. I have yet to do this simply because of money/time and I also use my fridge as a temperature controlled fermenting unit (when not filled with kegs....)

A quick shot of iodophor (or whatever sanitizer you use) from a spray bottle at the end of each use of the cobra heads should solve any problem you might have in this regard. A regular setup (kegerator) would be better as you would be able to add enough "choker" line to balance the system and you don't have to open the door each time you want a beer. A shot of iodophor into regular faucets also works and there are plugs you can buy that fit into the faucets when they are not in use (a great potential benefit WRT fruit flies if you keep your drip pan clean).

I have an older reach in cooler I store beer in, and I keep the picnic taps inside. This machine does produce some condensation, and the taps will mold up. I clean 'em every couple of days.
