How the *&^% do you use a beer gun???

Wed Apr 08, 2009 1:22 pm

I finally ponied up for a keg system and a beer gun. I didn't buy a tap system because I ASSUMED I could just use the beer gun to fill bottles and glasses, at least for now.

I have a trip later this week and I want to bring some of my beer so I have been trying to rush carbonate my brew. I set the pressure at 30 psi and shook the keg often for a couple of days. The keg is in my refrigerator and the fridge is set to it's coolest setting.

Last night I set the regulator pressure at 10psi and vented the pressure in the keg until is equalized at 10 psi. So now it is the afternoon of the next day and the pressure is at 10 psi. I plug my new, clean Beer Gun into the keg and try to fill a couple of beer glasses to drink while I fill some bottles.

First glass 100% foam. I fill a small pitcher thinking it will settle down... nope. I turn the regulator down to @ 2psi so the beer slowly flows and try to fill another glass... All foam again.

Now I'm mad and I'm wasting some seriously good beer.

I thought maybe my brew would be undercabonated and suffer from being a bit to young but I didn't think I wouldn't be able to get it out of the keg in a drinkable state.

Somebody edumicate me on how to use this fricken thing....

BTW - The keg is an old used corny but I did replace the gaskets and clean with PBW, rinse well and sterilized with Iodophore.

I'm in the process of making a stopper with a small vent for this thing. All I want is some beer in the bottles...... Shesh!

Are the bottles you are filling chilled or beer temp? That helps.

I only use my beer gun for long term storage beers, other wise, the bottle wand is the way to go.

One other thing, have you tried pouring yourself a beer not using the beer gun? Is the beer cold? I am wondering if maybe you overcarbed it too.

The shake method is definitely not an precise way to do it.

I just did 14 bottles with a cobra tap in each hand. One with beer, one with CO2. I hope I win something. :)

I'm going to try venting this keg for a while. Maybe it is over carbonated.

Maybe? Set your regulator to about 2 psi, a little higher if that's not enough pressure to push beer out of the keg. Hook up a tap cobra tap to the keg and run a little beer out onto the floor (just kidding...run it into your dump bucket or something) until the it flows clear with no foam and then run an ounce into a clean glass. As long as this takes place with little or no foaming, you can then taste a close approximation of the carbonation level of your beer.

BTW, if you are in crisis mode or something. PM me and we can talk on the phone if it's in the next 45 minutes. I've gotta go cellar the entries for the AHA NHC Western region.

I don't have a beer gun, but that is my vote. Especially if you tried to carbonate cold at 30psi. When I do the shake/roll thing (very rare), I usually do it at room temp.
