I've got a keeper

Thu Jan 22, 2009 7:13 pm

So the wife said to me tonight

"I think I'd rather have you keg the beer because it will be easier for you and I never finish a whole bottle."

I've got a keeper... wants me to keg and doesn't drink much :D

So my question is, I have a spare refridg in the garage but she wont let me cut holes to mount the taps. So are picnic taps adaquate or has someone here ever built a mounting system inside to mount the taps?

You definitely have a keeper! Some folks say I need a keeper, but that's an entirely different topic.

Anyway, picnic taps will work just fine. You still need to make sure you have the system balanced like any other keg system.

Aww, if she was REALLY a keeper, then she'd let you drill that sucker...

As Boog said, the picnic taps are fine (for now). The only drawback is that they are messy. They always drip, drip, drip. Kinda like Shat does now, because of Crazy Bitch. An alternative to the fridge is, of course, the chest freezer with a collar. I got mine for $50 on craigslist. You can never have enough refrigeration. It's just a matter of time. You might as well bite the bullet now. Use that garage fridge for your commercial bottles.

Oh wait... your were talking about the fridge... sorry... carry on..

BTW.... you could also wedge a 2x4 in there and mount some taps.... just a thought...

Make sure your hose clamps on your picnic taps are F'in tight and/or disconnect the tap when you arn't pouring. Lost a couple of gallons of APA that way... mini leak from the pressure, when force carb'ing.

I used picnic taps for 6 months or so, works fine.
I've seen a photo where a guy mounted a tap to the little butter dish door on the inside of the fridge door. If you want "real" taps, no reason you couldn't do something like that. Plus you wouldn't have the problem of a warm faucet causing a foamy pour.

I'd check craigslist for a junk fridge like yours and steal the door for yourself. Then the wife's door can be preserved. Or just use picnic taps.

My beer fridge is in the laundry room, and the likelyhood of a tap handle getting snagged by laundry and draining a keg led me to keep my taps inside. I have four faucets mounted to a board and fixed in the fridge just the right height above a shelf to accomodate a pint glass. It keeps the faucets cool, and its way better than picnic taps.

There's nothing permanent, so I can relocate the faucets when I have a better location for the fridge.
