Bottling a Belgian Golden Strong/Highly Carbonated Beer

Tue Dec 23, 2008 4:07 pm

Hey Bn-ers,

I've got a Belgian Golden Strong in the keg and am hoping to package a few bottles to share.

Anyone had success bottling such highly carbonated beers? JZ mentions that "normal" beer bottles aren't equipped for this kind of pressure. Certainly a Duvel bottle would work. What about those german/Russian River-style 500mls?

Any advice?

Cheers and Brew Strong!

I heard Jamil say today that regular bottles will blow at 4 volumes. I would keep it near 3 to be sure. The 325ml bottles that RR uses are fine, as are any of the belgian bottles. If there is any chance of additional fermentation in the bottle (Brett/Pedio/Lacto), I would only use the heavy glass bottles.

+1 Mylo.
I was lucky enough to advance a Belgian Golden Strong to the second round in 2007. I force carbonated it to about 3 volumes and filled three standard 12oz bottles that were filled by the Tasty method. They arrived intact and apparently tasty. I would keep the volumes to 3 or less. I poured a test bottle into a AHA plastic judging cup and it seemed plenty effervescent. Your results may vary. http://www.make4fun.com/ControlPanel/store/blackrose220734/Glass%20Breaking.mp3 :(

For now, RRBC is not using the the 375ml bottles, just 750ml. Too expensive.

Here's the Tasty method. http://www.thebrewingnetwork.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11232&p=110280&hilit=tasty#p110280 I waste less beer, get much less on the ceiling, and take less time setting up. YRMV.

My collection of bottle filling devices has seemed to stopped at the counter pressure bottle filler and the beer gun.

Tasty/Milo - Thanks a bunch for chiming in. I'm planning to do some bottling on Christmas but I'm not sure I'll get an answer to my follow-up question by then.

I was figuring the small (11.2oz) Duvel bottles would be able to contain the pressure. I mean, if they can contain Duvel, why wouldn't they be able to contain a homebrewed B.G.S.A.?

Appreciate the help guys! Have a great Christmas!
