Priming in primary?

Sat Nov 29, 2008 11:41 pm

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck adding sugar for priming to primary, just before bottling (i dont rack to secondry).
I usually crash chill my beers before bottling, so yeast shouldnt be too disturbed by a gentle stir.

Cheers

I have never tried it but it seems like you would still rouse up too much yeast.

I don't think you are going to have any "good" luck with this. Priming is more than just adding sugar. Once it is added you have to gently stir it or you will end up with inconsistent carbonation levels in your bottles. Once you stir you are going to rouse everything on the bottom and your bottles will be full of crap. Eventually it would settle out but in time that same crap will cause undesirable flavors in your precious beer.

My suggestion is to rack to a simple bottling bucket, add your sugar, stir gently and bottle out of the bucket. If that isn't feasible you can bottle off of your primary and use one of the products I have linked to below. These are simple sugar tablets. Thus you fill the bottle with beer, add a tab to each bottle and cap. This way you get consistent results without stirring up the shit in the fermenter. Best of luck!

+1. Bottling bucket is your friend. Tip, if you put the boiled and cooled sugar solution in it first - and then rack on top of it - you won't even have to stir. One more risk of contamination eliminated.

Even though it costs an extra dollar or two per batch, when I bottle I totally go with carb drops these days. Easy peasy and not even a remote chance of uneven carbonation.
Pri: Community Nudity Ale, Magician Red Ale, Berliner Weisse
Bottled: Paxton's Tripel and Dubbel, 400 Rabbits Ale, Cap'n Crunch Amber Oat Ale

The thing you have to remember with carbonation drops is that it takes a little extra time to dissolve.

I disagree. You will get better, more consistent results if you stir. Sanitize your spoon and stir gently and you eliminate any risk of contamination or oxidation.
