What size bottles for competition?

Wed Oct 22, 2008 10:53 pm

12oz. or Bombers? What's the consensus? I know nothing about comps right now, but I know I want to bottle some of my Vanilla Robust Porter batch that's in primary right now for future entry.

What are you all doing if they want to bottle 5-10 bombers and keg the rest? Anyone every used Munton's carb tabs? Is it easier to dial in your volumes of CO2 with the carbtabs as opposed to the coopers drops?

Cheers! :aaron

They will not accept bombers at most large competitions. Some smaller ones may make the exception but, hte NHC rule-sheet reads 10-14 ounce clean, unmarked, brown or green glass bottles with no permanent labels attached. Swing-top bottles are also not accepted. Cap must be solid black.

Thanks NoRemorse. Where can I view these rules you speak of?

Anyone want to weigh in on the various methods of bottle conditioning only a partial batch?

I have only entered one comp. so far, but have looked at MANY entry sheets, and have never seen anything that said anything about a BLACK cap. Maybe that is for NHC?? I have read "plain" caps....so I would say, use plain brown bottles with plain caps...to be safe. Maybe what you are refering to is blacked out? I have seen that, if the caps have a design on them, they have to be blacked out.

What noremorse meant was that any distinguishing marks on the cap - be it a logo, number, letter, etc. - must be blacked out with a sharpie.

Whenever I bottle, I use a sharpie to mark the style of beer on the cap, so I can tell all the blank bottles apart later. Its really tricky, and apparently, I'm the only person I know that can figure out the code... IIPA, RIS, EB, etc.

Anyways, I always have to remember to black them out when I enter a competition. A big black blob on the cap is ok.

Good luck!
