chest freezer help!

Fri Oct 17, 2008 10:59 am

so I got a really cheap, 15 cu ft chest freezer last night I obviously plan on using for dispensing. I want to build a collar for it this weekend and noticed last night that it has internal hinges. I didnt have time for pics so I will describe the best I can. All I can see is a curved piece of metal that looks like a guide rail of sorts that comes out of the bottom chest part and goes into the lid. this appears to be connected by a bolt in the back. obviously theres one at each corner to hold the lid. Am I screwed? can I still put a collar on this? has anyone ever heard/seen this before? thanks all for the help, hopefully I can get some useful info before I leave from work and dont have internet all weekend.

Without a pic, I have no idea what you are talking about, or how to help, if possible. I have never seen a chest freezer like that.

The hinge has to be attaching to the body of the freezer somehow, play around with it and figure out how you can expose the attachment point.

If you can get to where that attachment point is, either on the inside or the back than you can detach it and re-attach the lid to the wooden collar. Mine were external and on the back, but they were extra long so I had to make my collar a bit taller and used 2x10's to make it work.

If it helps at all, you can use construction adhesive to secure the collar to the body of the freezer. then just find a way to screw the hinges to the inside of the collar. I think you'll be fine......

thanks for the input all. So the lid hinge is apparently internal along the inside edge and the curved metal rod just went into the main body for support. I undid a screw and was able to pull the lid right off. on my collar I just drilled a hole on each side for the rod to go into. Works like a charm now.
