Why aren't the collars flush?

Thu Oct 09, 2008 10:07 pm

I'm soon to build a collar for a chest freezer kegerator so I can add taps and upholster it. I was envisioning a collar that's flush on the outside of the freezer. But, before I go with that design, I was wondering if there's any reason I would want the collar to overlap slightly on the outside. Is it strictly aesthetic or is there a practical reason for the overlap that I see in most of these kegerators?

Thanks

The overlap you are looking at is generally material fastened to an inner collar that is flush with the outside of the freezer. The basic collar is a simple 2X4 or 2X6 frame. The extra material is primarily for ascetics but it also serves to keep the collar from sliding around as the collar is not actually fastened to the freezer body.

For a project like yours, It would be easier to upholster a separate piece of material and fasten it to the collar once done. The upholstery fabric would interfere with the top and bottom seal if it were done directly to the basic collar.

If I'm picturing what you're talking about correctly, its the overlap that people use to seat the collar fimly on top of the base. To get it flush, you'd have to rig some other way to ensure the thing wasn't about to move on you.

Why not just put the collar on the inside? Or, if you can't afford the space the inside collar would take up, why not fasten some metal brackets on the inside?

I've always thought it looked tacky with the wide collars as well.

Yep, the practical reason that others have brought up is to keep that thing from sliding around - but as WitsEnd pointed out, you could just make a "inner collar" that extended down and kept it in place. I don't know about upholstery, though... Wood grain is, uh... a more "manly" solution. [LispingHomoInflection]Unless, of course, you could match the drapes, and it really "ties the room together".... then it would be fabulous.[/LispingHomoInflection]

Ha! Thanks!

I plan to dress it up with black vinyl and stainless steel. It should have a british steel look to it. No floral designs or lace.

It sounds like my plan will work.

Thanks everbody for the advice.
