how to fix a cross threaded keg post?

Sun Oct 05, 2008 8:03 pm

just picked up a batch of 5 kegs, cleaned them all up nice... replaced all the gaskets, the whole 9 yards.

The very last gas-in body WILL NOT thread onto the post. I tried mixing/matching until I definitively identified it's the threaded post on the keg that seems to be a bit cross threaded.

Anyone know how the heck to remedy this type of problem (other than get a new keg?).

if you found a die the right size and just went over the theds that would probably fix your problem. i would put alittle thed tape on it after too. tap and die sets can get real pricy though. maybe try going to a local auto shop and ask them if they could do it for you. even if they charge you $10 it would still be the cheapest and easiest thing to do.

Take the keg and a 6 pack of homebrew and see how much it costs you.

The trick is figuring out the correct thread size so you can fix it. Here is a list of the thread sizes
Firestone V Challenger, Firestone VI Challenger, Firestone Super
Challenger
Gas 9/16"-18
Liquid 5/8" -18

Cornelius Spartan & Super Champion
Gas 19/32" - 18
Liquid 19/32" - 18

Cornelius R (pin lock)
Gas 19/32" - 18 (2-pin)
Liquid 19/32" - 18 (3-pin)

John Wood 85, Firestone Challenger
Gas 11/16" - 18
Liquid 3/4" - 18

Firestone A, Firestone R, John Wood RA, John Wood RC (pin lock)
Gas 9/16" - 18 (2-pin)
Liquid 9/16" - 18 (3-pin)

The Cornelius Spartan & Super Champion (balls) will interchange with the
Cornelius R (pin), also in older models, I am pretty sure that the
Firestones A, R (pin) will interchange with the Cornelius ball.

Don't throw away the pin posts. In Cornelius R pins, they are $14 each
(wholesale)....

Firestone V, VI, Challenger, and Super Challenger (ball) posts will
interchange on the gas, but not on the liquid.... for various makes of posts.

This came from a quick search over on hbd.org.

Might also try a machine shop or welding shop. Those places would have that size die set too. My .02.
