I'm a fan of Oxi-clean for this. One overnight soak in a tupperwear tub and all the labels are off the bottles and sitting on the bottom. No physical effort required whatsoever. Plus Oxi-clean is cheap and you don't have to pay shipping, just hit the local grocery.

Deschutes, Kona, Redhook, Sam Adams, and even the local Fred Meyer "Fire Station 5" store brand bottles are great for reuse. Labels come right off. I especially like the Kona & Fred bottles because they have no raised identifiable lettering or designs like the Deschutes' hop vines or the Sam signature.

since I don't enter contests, the raised designs don't bother me. most of the time I don't even I don't even bother with the labels. I do have a bunch of smooth label free bottles just in case though.
