Not only do they use different fittings on different types of tanks but they are also painted different colors to keep people form accidentally making a mistake.
I don't believe you would be able to get anyone to put Co2 or anything other than helium in a clearly marked helium tank - they don't want to get sued into oblivion any more than you do. There are TONS of regulations in every industry to prevent this type of behavior, for good reason. I'm in health care and it is rather inmportant to make sure the tank you THINK has O2 in it really does, it's hard to breath pure nitrogen/carbon dioxide/acetylene etc... sadly people have died do to this very mistake.
However - call a local gas/welding distributor and see what they'll offer in trade for that tank. The place I go to does a dollar for dollar value trade for tanks, I traded a 20# CO2 tank for a 40 cu' 'beer gas' cylinder on a stright up trade because they were worth about the same amount.
