Thanks triple-oh_six and Quin. I think I might find a use for these after all.

It's not as complicated as you would think. I use a 5 gal and a 7.75 gal like the ones in your link. All you have to do to open it is drain the pressure and use a screwdriver to take of the ring. after that, clean and fill just like a corny keg. The only big difference is that you have to have the sankey keg coupler, which is no big deal, you can just get one from northern brewer. Pretty easy to figure out with a little bit of ingenuity.

Thanks. As you can tell my knowledge of kegs is just not there....yet.

I looked at Northern Brewer and saw the commercial couplers. Assuming you just twist it on. Once the coupler is on can you use a picnic tap? Or what can you use to dispense?

yep, i use a picnic tap that i actually bought an adapter for to attach a gas line. just took off the pump and plugged in the gas line from my CO2 canister. but yes, a picnic tap would work just fine.

Thanks. I pickup 5 kegs on Friday and to the LHBS on Saturday for a commercial coupler.

Got the kegs and have taken them apart and cleaned them.

To fill them do I just keep the spear out and fill using a siphon. Then insert spear, install commercial coupler then carb?

If you have a coupler with the check valves removed, you can fill right through the coupler. It's kind of slow though, and hard to tell when you are near full unless you have a scale to put the keg on. I prefer to pull the spear, fill with a pump, then put the spear back in.

I just keep the spear out and fill 'er right up. then put the spear and ring on and pressurize. one disadvantage to using sankey kegs though is that the air pressure you're adding is going on top of the beer rather than when you use the liquid out on a Corney keg. in a Corney keg the air would be able to pass through all the liquid on the way up and carbonate it, so when you pressurize the keg make sure to let it sit for a day or two and shake it up pretty good intermittently during that time.
