If you do a closed-sytem transfer, remember to keep your CO2 pressure real low, like 1 or 2 psi and don't hose clamp anything. Carboys are not pressure vessels.

Why bother with hooking up a hose to the IN ball lock when there is positive pressure from the keg pushing out the CO2 that was initially put into the keg?

I fill my keg with CO2, then pull open the release valve to relieve the CO2 and then start the transfer with the beer going into the OUT ball lock. I figure with the beer filling the keg, the CO2 is being pushed out of the keg so no oxygen can get in.
After the transfer is complete, I add more CO2 and pull on the relief valve a few times like Beerpal.

One reason is that you can see when the keg is full before you push beer into (and out of) the relief valve.

I tasted the beer through a picnic tap and it tasted basically the same.

I don't purge the kegs before filling. How is that most commonly done?

The other thing you should do is dismattle the keg and clean the posts and draw tube and CO2 really well. Could have a contamination inside the tube, soak in PBW or something similar, push high pressure CO2 through afterwards then soak in star san.

I completely disassemble my kegs and clean with PBW after every use.
