Preventing picnic line from going flat

Mon Jun 29, 2009 3:21 pm

I am the proud owner of a new Corney keg.
How do you keep the beer in the line from going flat between sessions? I unhooked it and tried to drain it, but it doesn't work.
Is there a trick to it?

Thanks,
Brannon

Just leave it hooked up. As long as there are no leaks it should be fine.

Shouldn't go flat in the lines. Not that I've experienced anyways.

But, since you were wondering. Unhook your line and hold the disconnect above the spigot. There's a little "pole" sticking out inside your disconnect. Push it down with your finger (it's gonna hurt) and open up the spigot. It should drain out.

The volume in the line is so small that it won't make a difference adding that amount of flat beer to a full glass of beer. Besides if you leave it hooked up it's still under pressure and it won't go flat.

I don't actually drain my picnic tap line when I'm not using it. I drain the beer out of it by hooking the line up to my keg of Star San and flushing the beer out with sanitizer. I then just hang up the line full of star san. When I next use that line for beer I just run out the first ounce or two, discard that, and then fill my glass.

If I leave my lines full of starsan, they tend to get really cloudy, so I'll drain mine before storing. You haven't had that issue, Bug?

Hey I like this solution. I don't have another keg yet, but when I do I'll remember this.
Thanks for the tip Wayne.

Just FYI, it's also very easy to disassemble both the tap and quick disconnect ends for cleaning in between sessions. The plastic QD that I have has a large screwdriver slot on top. Unscrewing it allows you to remove it, an o-ring, needle valve, and spring. The Tap has a threaded collar that unscrews by hand.

Once both ends are open the entire line and all of the parts can be soaked in PBW and / or Starsan. Forcing cleaner through the line works well, but I like knowing for sure that no funk is hiding in there and perform the routine regularly.

Cheers! :jnj
