"Closed" transfer to keg... Don't do this

Thu Apr 17, 2008 9:19 am

I kegged my first all grain batch last night.

I racked the beer to the keg via the out post, using 1-2 PSI of CO2 pressure applied to the carboy via a HEPA filter. This technique worked pretty well.

One thing I forgot to do was to relieve the pressure in the keg (11 PSI) before attaching the racking tubing to the out post via a Quick Disconnect.

Just an FYI... 11 PSI feeding into a carboy isn't a great idea. It produced a quick explosive burst. Fortunately the QD wasn't seated all the way and I was able to get it off quickly. No serious harm caused, I was suprised to see that the racking cane tip stayed on.

Yow. That could have been problematic. I do this sometimes and always attach a gas in QD to the receiving keg so the pressure just vents off....
