Compact Kegerator Help

Fri Apr 11, 2008 2:47 pm

I've been given one of these:

I'd like to turn it into a kegerator but I'd have to remove the freezer in the top to have enough room to fit a keg in it. Has anyone ever attempted to remove the freezer from a compact refrigerator?

Well, if it was given to you for free, and you ended up screwing it up - then there's no ill effect, right?

I'd do some "explorative dismantling". I would immediately abort the mission if I ran into any snags. You don't know if any of those coils are built into the freezer compartment that you are trying to remove.

You could always save it for your bottle storage, and get yourself a chest freezer, instead. A homebrewer can NEVER have enough refrigeration.

Is it just the shelf type freezer compartment? What I did with mine was unplug it and let it come up to room temperature for a day. Pull out the plastic shelf part and then take the metal shelf part and very slowly and gently twisted the shelf so it was pointing vertically down toward the bottom of the fridge. The very gently bend the curved part up so it was completely flat. Then even more gently and slowly push the shelf so it laid flat against the back of the fridge. You want to make sure the tube that connects the freezer shelf doesn't crack or you're screwed. Worked for me and now I have myself a nice little 2 tapper kegerator. Although mine was 4.3 cu. feet so at 3.9 cu. feet you'll probably be lucky to get one corny in there.

I was hoping to create a nice two tap kegerator for the game room... Sounds like it's not possible to remove the coils entirely.... Might try to what Rhino did and see what happens.
