Keg lid

Fri Jun 24, 2011 5:50 am

I got my kegging system setup and kegged my first batch two days ago. I kegged the beer at 30psi and 58F. I was storing at 30psi and 40F. Last night I went to check on the brew and the lid was loose and bubbling.

I turned up the CO2 and got a good seal. I also poured a little taster and besides being a little flat it seems to taste fine.

Is this normal? Is the beer ok?

To me this is not normal. When you first seal the keg, double check to make sure it is not bubbling befor walking away. You are lucky you had gas left. You can check by spaying some Satr San around the edges. Since gas was escaping you probably got little or no carbonation in the beer.
What I normally do after filling the keg is before you clamp down the lid, I lift up the keg by the clamp and this helps it jostle the lid into a good sealing position, then I attach the gas and let the pressure position the lid into an even more secure fit. Once you hear the gas stop filling, then clamp the lid on on you should be good to go.
Works for me.
Good luck, kegging rules.

Regulator was still set to 30 Psi. Leak or no leak, keg was at 30 Psi, just did so at the sake of losing gas. Sucks to have to fill those bottles so frequently due to leaks. New O'ring kits sometimes pay off.

I've had a few kegs that just wouldn't quite seal. I went with an O-ring that was slightly larger in cross section and of softer material and the problem went away. I get them from Williams Brewing. http://www.williamsbrewing.com/KEG-LID- ... 58C78.aspx
