I agree the weight would be too much if you used 2x6's or similar, but I was thinking using some 1 inch insulation and some masonite to lighten the load would work. I'm not worried about lifting the kegs in and out, but it is big enough where I use it as my primary lagering fridge as well, and the thought of dropping the 6.5 gallon carboy full of goodness is what I don't like.

Chances are I'll go with the lower mounted one though, just on the laziness factor and it seems a lot easier, with less chance of fucking it up.

I would think the engineering question would be how much weight are the hinges designed to hold? That would determine where and how I would attach the collar. Picture the lid falling backwards because it couldn't hold the weight of the collar with the lid opened.

99.999 of them are attached to the base. Don't be the .001

I attached mine to the bottom. Don't wanna bend/move my taps/lines every time I get in and out of the freezer. The weight of the lid on mine is heavy enough to keep a great seal.

Brewpunk and anyone else who cares to be in the minority on this:

With the taps attached to the lid you can easily run the lines along the lid like in these pictures.

We prop the lid open with a golf club when we're humping kegs in and out of it. The vinyl trim we used is pretty sturdy. The hinges seems to be holding up just fine.

Clever. I have towers, but if I ever do a unit with a collar, I think I am sold on the bottom of the lid option.

If however you are set on attaching to the freezer with lid on top... Why can't you build in a section of the collar that folds down drawbridge style so you have a low point to lift kegs/carboys over. Do it right and the folded down bit can give you a nice little flat platform you can rest the heavy object on, while you change your grip from "lift up high", to "reach over and lower down" mode.
