Chest freezer temps

Mon Sep 06, 2010 8:30 pm

Hey everyone, had a question about chest freezer temps... I live in the desert where it can get quite hot in my garage in the summer, and pretty much freezing in the winter. I was thinking about investing in a chest freezer with temp controller for managing fermentation temps. Does anyone know if I would be able to maintain ale fermentation temps up to around 70 degrees with this setup, or would that be too warm for the system to handle? Thanks in advance!

No problem. You'll need a temp control of course (Johnson or Ranco). Also get some DampRid to take the excess moisture out.

Would it be possible to "compartmentalize" the freezer, so I can serve finished beer out of the tap on one side, while fermenting ales at a higher temp on the other side?

No need. Take a look at the pix I posted. With this setup (and each carboy being run on a dedicated temp controller) you can keep the freezer (also run on a temp controller) at any temp you desire while the carboys are kept at any other temps you want. Works great.
