2 kegs, one CO2, odd temps, upcoming party

Wed Aug 11, 2010 5:42 pm

I have a party in 7 weeks, that I plan on serving from my 2 kegs. I have no keg fridge so my first beer has been a frustrating trial and error getting the carbonation to work out. Since I want this beer to be perfect for the party, I was thinking about priming in the keg, so I can assure that it stays carbonated regardless of temps. I was thinking of putting the kegs on ice a few days before the party, but will have a 2 1/2 hour drive the night before.

I know sediment will be an issue, with only two kegs I could transfer the first one to the second keg after it's carbonated to clean it up, but that's not an option with the second one. How much of a problem will it actually be? Am I better off to force carbonate? They are in the basement at about 60-65 degrees. I'm worried if I force carbonate than put on ice, I'll lose my carbonation, just like when I put it in a growler in the fridge for a few hours. Or the reverse, I'll have nothing but foam pouring at the cooler temp.

Hit me with you thoughts, ideas, critiques, and advice bn army. Thanks

Any chance that bottling might be a better option? I love kenneg beer as much as anyone but it sounds like since you have had issues with the kegs, and will be travelling, a bottle might be the better way to go? I might be completely off here but just a thought.

Either way, I hope you have a good party and that your beer is a hit!

Once my beer was carbonated I have not had a issue with over foaming if I take it to a party, but that might just be me. If you have the beer now or you are going to have it soon, I would think force carbination should be fine givin the amount of time you have.

One a side note, I would get the first keg as clean and clear as you can, let them get drunk off that by the time they hit the second one they wont care if its a bit cloudy!

I wouldn't bother transferring to the second keg. I would guess that all that yeast has become too dense to stay suspended for long. If the trip is the night before, I would just make sure you keep it as still as possible once you get there and my guess is you'd be fine. Just make sure you're ready for that first shot of yeast when you initially dispense (I.E. don't give it to anyone ;)).

Might even be a better idea just to pour that yeast off before you drive, avoiding the majority of the gunk in the first place. This would allow you to "clean up" both kegs.

Thanks everyone, I think until I get a keg fridge, piming my keg will probably give me the most consistant results. Good thinking about pouring a drink or two before I go, that should help get most of the loose slurry out.
