Keg Conditioning (sediment question)

Wed Apr 28, 2010 8:06 am

Ok... So I think that I am going to try and Keg Condition an Extra Pale Ale.... I am just a little worried about the sediment at the bottom of the keg after conditioning....

So how does that effect serving... what are people's thoughts on Keg Conditioning beers... pros and cons?

Well if you keep your keg in one place and never move it then you are fine. After a couple of weeks at a very low temperature everything will settle to the bottom. Your first 2 pints will be cloudy but after that it will be clear. Just don't bump or move your keg and you will have clear beer.

Hmmmm... Maybe this isn't a good idea for me.... I am going to be driving it to a party...

Maybe I should just force carbonate it and then drive it to the party and serve... I will just leave it in the carboy until about a week before the party and then force carb it... put pressure on the keg and take it to the party...

Whether you force carb or keg condition, if you plan to move the keg you should first transfer it to a clean keg once carbonation is done and it has dropped pretty much clear. Just make a jumper hose with a beer-out fitting on each end, pour the first pint or so into a glass to discard, then hook up the jumper. Stop when you see sludge in the line.
