I have a 7.7 cu ft chest freezer that I just recently mounted a 10" collar and two taps. I can fit a 20 lb co2 tank and 6 corny kegs. If I moved the tank out, I'd be able to fit 7 corny kegs in the freezer. I plan to eventually move the tank outside and use the 7th keg space to make soda and add a tap for the kid.

Using the chest freezer/colar option, you can count on the gas manifold (connectors, hosing, backflow preventer, shutoff valve) costing ~$30 per keg, ~$60 per unique pressure setting, and depending on components $60-$100 per tap. In the end, much cheeper than buying a pre-made system and you can piece meal the upgrades until you have it the way you want.

On Tap: Barrel Fermented Berlinerweisse 3.2%; American Pale Ale 6.3%, Amarillo Blond 5%
Aging: Flander's Red in a 60 gallon Merlot barrel
Fermenting: Robust Porter 6.5%

I bought an 8.0 cu ft. freezer from lowes and did the same, but since I can fit 6 kegs in there, I built it for 6 taps. I just put the collar on last weekend - works great. I'm planning on slowly building around it so you don't even know there's a chest freezer in there, but that's going to take some time.

Like ED said, the nice thing is you can have a kegerator online while you continue your upgrades - some of those parts can be expensive.

Build your own and add to it over time as you can afford:

Built the homemade beer dispensing system in 2008. I used a lot of ideas from various kegerator projects found on the web. The whole thing is over engineered and built to last. This year, I recently added 2 more faucets. The box can hold five 5gal corney kegs and one 3 gal. Gas system is mounted to the back side on heavy duty fire extingusiher brackets to 3/4 plywood.

Started in 2008 collar-type build. Added micromatic regulators in 2009. Mounted the gas system to the rear in 2010 + 2 new faucets and homemade tap handles. Originally gas was kept inside (not the best idea). No freezers were harmed during the construction of this kegerator. Original Materials List:
(1) 8.9cu Whirlpool chest freezer
(2) Ventmatic Faucets
(1) Stout Faucet
(3) 4in shanks with hose and fittings
(2) Cedar 2 X 4 X 10
(1) Marine Grade Plywood Sheet 3 X 5
(2) Cedar 1 X 6 X 10
(2) Poplar 3/8 X 2 X 4 X 2ft hobby plank
(8) Galvanized 2in L brackets
(8) 3in Corner Braces
(4) 450lb rated casters
(12) 1/4 X 3in rust-resistent lag screws
Spar Varnish
Liquid Nails
Silicone sealant
#10 3in Brass wood screws
2.5in 16g porter cable finishing nail
Weather stripping
Corporal, BN Army
On Tap: Whatever IPA, Oat Stout, Cider, Citra-Mosaic Hopped Cider, Cherry Cider.
Aging: Black Currant Lambic, Oud Bruin, Eng B-wine, 65gal barrel of scabby 3rd runs w/Rosalare-Lacto Brux -we just call T.E.D.
