quick kegging question

Tue Feb 09, 2010 8:59 pm

just wanted to know is it a good idea to keep your liquid side on the keg connected to the keg when your not using it or should i be disconnecting it every day and cleaning it out? as it stands i have been sprawying the spout with starsan after i am done with a pour should i be doing something diffrent.

also is it worth transfering from one keg after you are done carbing it for 1-2 weeks to a new keg to drop off the whatever is left on the bottom. (using the out connectors and tubing from one out port on one keg to the out port on the other) ?

I usually keep my serving lines connected. i think JZ disconnects his every time. Either way works.

I'm a big fan of doing keg to keg transfers, especially a couple of days after adding gelatine. It's usually almost as good as filtering and lets you move the kegs around without worrying about stirring up all that muddy sediment again.

Keep them connected. Sounds like you are working too hard. A bar or brewery follows a maintenance schedule that does not include always disconnecting them after a sinlge pour :)

ah how does using gelatine work nevered used it and was thinking about filtering. I hate having to dump first few oz that come out of the keg just because there is sediment in it. ( Feels like a sin to waste good beer lol)

Gelatin makes stuff stick together and fall to the bottom of the keg. If you get a reasonably sediment-free transfer from primary, the first 4-8 oz out of the keg are very cloudy as the gunk on the bottom right around the dip tube gets sucked up. You can drink it, but it doesn't taste very good. I wouldn't filter just to save 8 oz of beer, it's much cheaper to use 1/2 pack of gelatin and dump that 1/2 pint. A keg-keg transfer is nice so you don't have to worry about stirring up sediment if you move/bump the keg. If you leave the keg stationary though you don't need to transfer, everything will pour clear until the last pint.
