Keg Tubing questions/Problems

Sun Feb 07, 2010 12:59 pm

So, before I get into this, let me start off by saying my goal was to have my first batch of kegged beer ready to serve on Superbowl Sunday and I've accomplished that. I have 2 growlers of carbonated 11.6% imperial stout in the fridge ready to take up to my sister and brother in law's place for the game today!

Having said that I ran into some issues that I would imagine will be easily solved, but here goes.

I have pin lock kegs...deal with it. They were nearly free and I was desperate to keg so I bought them.

so, there seems to be 2 different tubing sizes for kegging. Let's call them 1/4" (small tubing) and 3/8" (large tubing).

I bought one of these from Northern Brewer http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/g ... rsion.html

but the end of mine is just open tubing

the problem is that the outlet on my regulator fits the 3/8" tubing, but the 1/4" tubing is a bitch to get over the regulator outlet.

I also bought one of these http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/k ... l-gas.html Image with the corresponding http://www.northernbrewer.com/media/cat ... e_1941.jpg Image

so, everything gas related is 1/4" except for the output of the regulator. When I forced carbed I used the 3/8" tubing with a secure connection at the regulator outlet and wrapped the shit out of the 1/4" barb with teflon tape to build up it's size at the disconnect and it worked for carbing, but when I pulled the keg/bottle to connect the serving stuff (I carbed through the liquid out side because the dip tube goes all the way to the bottom) the tube slipped off the end of the barb and stout started spraying everywhere.

so now I'm stuck. I'm aftaid to leave my bottle connected and I'm concerned with the connection at the regulator output.

How do I resolve this?

Try soaking the tube in some really hot water for a couple of minutes. You should be able to slip it onto the fitting then.

I did that to get it on there as far as I could, but I'd feel better if it was just a little farther on there

Sometimes those fittings can be a bitch to get on there. Keep trying.

I soak the tubing in some boiling water for about a minute and then cuss like mad until it finally goes on. I then secure it with a stainless steel hose clamp.

ok, I boiled some water and soaked the hose in it for a while and then mashed it on there and clamped the shit out of it with a stainless home clamp.

Beer is continuing to carb at 17psi and I'll turn the psi down after another week or so and then just serve at 8-10psi
