New Kegerator +

Sat Oct 17, 2009 2:33 pm

Last weekend I was at a friends house in the garage and saw his chest freezer. I commented on how I needed one to make a kegerator and he offered it to me because it was empty and they hadn't used it in several years. Smash cut to delivery today where I now need to make a few decisions.

The freezer internal dimensions are 66'wX27.5'dx30't. there is a ledge where the compressor sits inside where I plan on sticking my CO2 bottle. There is plenty of room for quite a few kegs (not just to tap but also to condition) so my first decision is how many taps to build. I plan on building a coffin box top similar to the amazing setup on HBT http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/keezer-project-31221/

So in general for those that have them, how many taps would be ideal? I plan on keeping at least 4 different styles on tap but could easily do more.

I have 3 and think that is about right. Granted, I have thought at times that it would be nice to have more, but really it takes a while to get through the three different variations I have on tap. You generally get hooked on one beer at a time and the others suffer. I don't know, but any more then 3 I think is too much. Just my thought.

I say, put as many in there as you think you will need....I have 4, one is a stout/nitro set-up, and wish I had room for more!!!

Wow, that is an ambitious set up, very cool.
Keep in mind the hump inside the freezer can easily seat a 5 gallon carboy with out being propped up so I keep my tank on the outside for easy access.
An extra tap never hurts, especially when you have a party. Shoot for 4 taps, 3 with beer and one with sparkling water. I know it sounds wussy, but it is a nice treat for dinner and is a great palate cleanser between different styles of beer.
Good luck.

I started with 2, but spaced / placed them so I can add 2 more later. I would love to have more taps, but I really don't want to clean them all, so 2 is good for now.

if you look on HBT I think someone over there found some plugs that they used to fill the holes they weren't currently using.

So, for example, they set up for 3 taps, but drilled 5 holes and then stained/painted the collar so that in the future if they wanted to add more taps, the holes would already be drilled and they'd just have to add the shanks and faucets.

I have 3 taps, 4 would be better. But, check out the article in BYO magazine (Jan-Feb 2010) on page 59. "Gas on Tap" project. I describes in detail how to hook up gas out, cleaner out, and a water out fitting on the outside of your kegerator. This is a great idea, especially if you have room for a keg of cleaner etc.
