best way to carb using beer gas?

Thu Nov 12, 2009 1:20 pm

What is the best way to carb with beer gas? It seems as though everyone has a differant opinion. One says carb with co2 and serve with beer gas. Another says carb with beer gas using a air stone and 30min bleed. It can't really be that complicated, can it? I just want to enjoy my stouts like they were intended. Ihave everything set up and ready. my stout will be ready to keg in about a week.

Carb with CO2, server with beergas. Beergas is 30% CO2 and if you try to use it to carb uncarbonated beer it will take nearly FOREVER, because you will have to vent it periodically, to get rid of the excess nitrogen which is not soluable in beer. This is a waste of beergas, which is more expensive than CO2.

Thanks for the input. I hooked up the beer gas to an allready carbed keg of mild last night to experiment with and it worked well. so carbing with co2 first is the way to go. Thanks again

What pressure did you serve at with the beer gas? How long is your serving line? Just bought my beer gas this morning and waiting for my faucet and regultor via mail. Don't want to screw it up.

Thanks

I don't think that serving line length has as much to do with this setup vs. a conventional setup. Yes, you might loose a few PSI to the line length, but you will be pushing it at 25-30 PSI, so I think it's pretty negligable. I looked at the restricter plate on mine, and I think it had "30" stamped into it. I assume that is what pressure it is designed for.
