Safe carbonation levels for crown bottles

Mon Sep 07, 2009 10:58 am

I am bottling a Tripel soon and want to bump up the carbonation. I've heard 3.5 units is doable, but would like to hear your thoughts and experiences.
Bottles are 22 oz. with a few 12oz. All are good, thick glass, but not nearly as thick as Belgian corkers. Thanks.

Keep it under 3 vol's for crown cap bottles, unless you know they can take it. Not worth the risk.

Shoot for 2.9-3....

+1 for standard 22 and 12 ounce bottles. The issue is usually not with the cap, but rather, the thin-walled glass and less radiused shapes. Most Belgian bottles, like those used for Duvel, Rochefort, and Orval can handle 5 volumes with no problems.
