Re: Corny Dimensions

ok, so I can't let this go. I need a 22" tall keg to fit my "fridge" and would much rather use ball lock than pin lock since 100% of my club uses ball lock and I don't want to be the only jackass with pin lock kegs when we all get to gether to get fucked up.

So, does anyone know the specifics on the short 22" kegs that can use both pin or ball lock?

Brand? thread dimensions? anything? I've sent a few emails to various corny suppliers and have not received any response.

Help please!

Here is a link to the information you need to figure out interchangeability. http://www.ipass.net/mpdixon/KegThreadSizes.htm

This lists the thread sizes for each post on all the major brands of kegs, both ball lock and pin lock. You will quickly notice there is not a lot of interchangeability. If you want to use both ball and pin lock kegs, your best bet is to set up your system with flare fittings on all your gas and beer lines. Once you are set up like that, it takes less than a minute to change connectors from ball to pin and vice versa.

Wayne, that's freaking awesome info!

now, since I haven't started kegging yet and don't currently have any kegs, is it easy to tell who makes a keg?

Also, can you explain what a flare fitting is? is it opposed to something else that takes longer to interchange?

Thanks again.

Matt

The manufacturer and model of the keg is stamped right on the outside of the keg. You may have to move the keg around a bit to get the light to hit it right to be able to read it.

The keg connectors come with either a threaded (flare) end or a barbed end to which the tubing hooks up. Take a look at the picture below.

This is a flare fitting. The tubing pushes onto the barb on the right. This is the same type of barb found on barbed keg connectors. The threaded nut on the left side screws right on to the threaded keg connector. As you can see, it is much quicker and easier to unscrew this from one connector and screw it on to a different type of connector than to remove and replace the hose on a barbed connector.

I use these fittings on all my beer and gas lines.

So I finally got some kegs today. A guy (somewhat) locally) had 4 cornelius kegs listed for $60 on Craigslist. He made a typo and really wanted $75 for them. I didn't care and picked them up. He also had a full 20# full CO2 tank so we made a deal for an even $100 and swapped parts for cash.

Turns out they're 4-5 gallon Pin Lock Cornelius brand kegs and 1 smaller pin lock keg. It's made by Cornelius so I'm guessing it's either 2.5 gallon or 3 gallon.

In looking at the link Boog posted at the bottom of the first page of this thread, if I'm reading that information correctly it looks like, if they're Corenlius brand (and at least 2 of them are, I'm blind as shit and couldn't tell on the other 2, but my perfect vision having wife will be able to tell me) that means I should be able to swap them out with the Cornelius brand ball lock posts?

Also, as I'm obviously a kegging noob, the small keg has a vent on the lid that I pulled and a tiny bit of pressure came out and I am easily able to remove that lid. The other 3 kegs don't have a vent with a ring I can pull. They have these little knobs on them with 2 or 3 holes in them. How do I vent these so I can get the lids off and look inside? One of them (supposedly) still has coke inside it and I'd like to get them cleaned up, seal kits ordered, cut a dip tube or 2 and have them ready to use when my next batch is ready.

I can take pics if that helps.

Thanks!!

Release the pressure buy pressing the poppet on the gas-out post.

I just took some "stuff" to the face by hitting the liquid out poppet first, but the lids are off now!!!
