Bottling 1 gallon of brew

Wed Jul 01, 2009 4:06 pm

Okay here's the deal:

I brewed 6 gallons of Jamil's oatmeal stout that I transferred from primary to (2) 1 gallons jugs and a regular carboy secondary. I'm using the 2 jugs to try adding different chili peppers to make a spicy beer, while keeping the rest in a carboy for kegging.

Now, I want to put the 2 gallons of test beer into bottles, but I don't know if the traditional bottling bucket/bottle filler is the best route. I was think just pouring carefully from the jug into bottles using a sanitized funnel, but I thought I'd ask around first.

Thanks in advance.

i've made a lot of one gallon batches, and used the bucket method. never pour beer unless you're intending on drinking it very, very soon. not worth risking oxidation

Point taken.

However, how do you get the brew from the 1 gallon jug to the bucket without pouring? I haven't seen a hood for a 1 gallon jug.

Thanks

i've never actually used one one of those hoods. i use an autosiphon, but have also used just regular ol siphoning from a piece of vinyl hose. just fill the hose up with water/starsan solution, then start the runoff into a separate container until the sanitizer has run out, then let the beer run off with as little splashing as possible

If they're not carbonated yet, add the boiled and cooled dextrose liquid to the jug and then pour into c02 purged bottles and cap. You should be fine as long as you have the proper amount of sugar for carbonating. This is were those Carb drops come in raelly handy.

I use my boil kettle as a bottling bucket for my small batches since its a smaller than a bucket. I autosiphon or normal siphon from the one gallon to the pot. I wound a heavy electrical wire around my autosipon to hold it off the bottom of the 1 gallon so I don't have to hold it. I'm lazy.

i recently had to sell all my real brewing gear and I wanted to brew a 1 gallon batch on the stove BIAB style. I fermented in the plastic water jugs that I purchased the water in and I bottled in 2-liter pop bottles. I tried to get everything as clean as possible and I greased the threads on the 2-liter top with some keg lube and screwed the caps back on as tight as possible. This has to be one of the jankiest setups ever and I don't know if the bottles will carbonate the way I sealed them. I filled the bottles with a hose and a turkey baster to start the siphon. I put the 1st bottle in the fridge about an hour ago, so I'll report back with the results. I accidentally bottled in rootbeer bottles so I hope its not a rootbeer pale ale.
