Fining a keg

Sun Apr 26, 2009 3:26 pm

Okay, so I have a Vienna lager that is kegged and chilled to 33 lagering. I am getting some chunkies in the first 4 pints so far. I understand that I need to let it all settle out but this keg is destined for a Cinco de Mayo party. I want it clear and have some isinglass. It's already carbonated. Should I pitch in the clarifier now rather than chance waiting it out and if so what are the procedures and precautions. I have never clarified a beer before. The beer is great and I just want all the non craft beer drinkers to stay on board (if you know what I mean).

I have successfully cleared beers with flavorless gelatin. Heat up about a cup of water and mix it with about 1/2 a pack of gelatin (knox). Dump it in the keg and let it sit 24 hours ... crystal clear. even better after 48.

tampa is right, but there are a few caveats.

1. be careful adding anything to carbonated beer. Opening the keg could cause beer to foam out of the keg. Also adding anything to the keg could add nucleations sites to increase the chances of your beer foaming over. Dissolve the gelatin in hot water like Tampa said and degass the keg a couple of times prior to opening it to add the finings.

2. Finings are great they take yeast and other haze particles out of the beer and drop them to the bottom of the keg. Pull 1 or 2 pints off and you should have bright beer after that. Unless, you move the keg. If you move the keg then you have to let it settle for a little while and pull more beer of to get bright beer. Since you said this beer is for a party you might think about pulling off a few pints then moving the beer to another keg. Unless the keg won't move for the party. Then you should be ok.

Cheers!
I think I've had about enough beer tonight...Now I need some Whiskey to sober up
