I may have bottled to early, any help

Wed Mar 18, 2009 6:21 pm

I had to bottle a day early and am quite un easy about the possibility of exploding bottles. I used grolsch bottles so opening and releasing the excess gas is not an issue. How do I know if I need to open and let the gasses escape? How do I avoid losing all carbonation together? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My OG was 1.42 I bottled at 1.10, if that helps. :?: :?

I think you mean that it was 1.042 and 1.010?

If this is the case you ought to be just fine bottling at 1.010, I'm not totally sure on a limit, like a number that would be too high. I can think of beers though that have FGs as high as 1.022 (American Stout Category) off the top of my head, which iis definitely higher than your 1.010, and I doubt seriously that they explode.

I would be kinda scared, contamination-wise about opening and closing the bottles once they're closed for the first time anyways, especially if the beer isn't finished carbonating and there's still "extra" sugar in there, which would make a decent home for wild yeasts and bacteria that could be on your hands or in the air.

Hope that helps,
Brad

You'll be fine. At 1.010 from 1.042, you have already exceeded 75% Apparent Attenuation. That's mid-range to high for most ale strains.

+1, don't sweat it... don't mess with it. You'll be fine.
