Newb question on capping

Thu Mar 05, 2009 8:17 am

I haven't seen any helpful information on this yet, so maybe someone can help me out here...

What benefit is there to capping with swingtops as opposed to a normal cap, or vice-versa? Beyond preference or convention, is there a good reason to do one over the other?

Thanks BN'ers! :bnarmy:

Swing tops are easy as you don't have to "cap" them. There is some maintenance that has to be done from time to time. But they are pretty convenient for personal use.

Crown tops are great because they are readily available and inexpensive. You can send them home with your buddies and not worry about getting them back. They are accepted at competitions. But you do have the trouble of capping.

So it really is only about preference for usage?

Leave it to me to ask questions about the most obvious topic ever lol

Thanks

Yes, preference.

I would also add that they suck for anything over 2.5 vols - because then the seal gets deformed and they leak.

I have several dozen swing top bottles and don't use them very often. I have problems with them during bottle conditioning, I can never get good carbonation. But if I am taking a few bottles to a party, I will use the swing tops and fill them "Tasty-style" from the keg.

I especially like them for Christmas beers. I have a couple of big 2 liter growlers that I use for that.

The only "benefit" or "detriment" I've seen from the swingtops is the fact that they'll release the pressure if it gets too high. Capped bottles may or may not explode (this has never happened to me).
